Building for somewhere, not anywhere

Edition 2024 - Seminar Rotterdam - Building for somewhere, not anywhere foto 1.jpeg

Don Murphy, VMX Architects

In his talk, Murphy will share some thoughts on facade design and discuss several of his firm's current projects. One of those projects is the multifunctional The Puls of Amsterdam on the Zuidas, which has been given a fascinating faceted facade. What factors shaped that facade? And how is that facade made?

Another project that Murphy will focus on is Haasje Over at Strijp-S in Eindhoven. Because the appartments there are 4.5 meters high, everything is larger than usual, including the windows, which have deep window sills so that residents can sit 'in' their view, as it were.

An interesting example of nature-inclusive design is the residential tower that VMX Architects designed together with DS Landschapsarchitecten on the Zuidas. Mature plants will be planted on the balconies of this residential tower, and space has been made on the roof for a large greenhouse.

VMX Architects was recently selected for the design of a multifunctional building at the Schoterboshof in Rotterdam. In addition to the rolling doors in the plinth, so characteristic of VMX Architects, the architecture of this building is characterized by a varied play of prefab concrete frames. How does Murphy want to detail that facade?
