Regenerative Architecture in Practice
What does architecture look like when buildings, materials and landscapes do not merely reduce their impact, but actively contribute to a healthier living environment?
During ARCHITECT@WORK Rotterdam, Natrufied Architecture presents an exhibition showcasing four projects that demonstrate how regenerative architecture can take shape in practice. Each project explores a different aspect of the same design approach, united by one shared principle: the built environment should not only minimise its impact, but give back more than it takes.
From Soil to Façade focuses on the origins of building materials. The research explores how façade materials can once again be locally grown and how agriculture and architecture can reinforce each other. The project investigates new relationships between landscape, production and construction.
Soft Sight demonstrates how infrastructure can become part of a living ecosystem. The project transforms the traditional noise barrier into a living screen that supports biodiversity, captures rainwater and makes use of locally grown biobased materials.
At De Warren, the focus shifts towards the city and the way we live together. Through the reuse of materials, nature-inclusive façades and a strong collective housing structure, the building creates space for both people and the plants and animals that share our urban environments.
De Torteltuin highlights the social dimension of regenerative building. Old front doors from a demolition project in Alkmaar are given a second life as façade cladding. Processed by a social workshop and installed by the future residents themselves, the project demonstrates that regeneration is not only about materials and ecology, but also about craftsmanship, collaboration and community building.
Through models, a 1:1 façade mock-up, material samples and project imagery, the exhibition reveals that regenerative architecture is not a style or a specific technique, but a way of designing. An approach in which landscape, biodiversity, circularity, local production and social connection are integrated from the very beginning of the design process.
The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the built environment: not as a collection of separate objects, but as a living system in which architecture can make a positive contribution to people, nature and the climate.
