Site soils and geo-based construction alternatives for the Geneva Ice Rink

A new ice rink is expected to be built in Geneva by 2030. At the request of the client, the design team (Ingeni and Architech) invited the Origo cooperative, which specialises in bio- and geo-based materials, to explore new possibilities and develop practical alternatives to conventional construction methods. Through site analysis, the study of excavated materials and full-scale (1:1) prototypes, bio- and geo-based solutions have proven to be suitable even within a highly constrained context, demonstrating that it is possible to build differently.
