Sharing these authentic landscapes is a central theme in the firm’s work. According to landscape architect Harro de Jong, most people are not primarily interested in having their own private garden; rather, they want space and views, and it can be more interesting to share those collectively. After all, maintenance of such a landscape can then be outsourced or managed together with a group of enthusiasts. Because together, you can do and have more. The dune landscape he designed on top of a residential building at the Groenmarkt in the heart of Amsterdam, for example, includes a shared swimming pool. The same applies to the redeveloped Landgoed Klingelbeek in Arnhem, which features a natural swimming pool on the banks of the Rhine.
In Arnhem, two islands are currently being developed in the floodplains of the Rhine, where more than 400 homes will be built: Meinerswijk. Harro de Jong was closely involved in initiating this development and continues to work on it in collaboration with KondorWessels Projecten. The islands will feature various neighborhoods, around harbors and on a river dune, and the proceeds from this development will be used to create a 300-hectare floodplain park, right in the middle of the city, accessible to everyone.
