Nicolas Scharff, architecte associé, SILT

Through an exploration of various architectural projects, we will examine what a project encounters both before and around it. Engaging with what came before us and what surrounds us - materials, contexts, processes - dictates a particular approach and raises questions about the means at our disposal. Perhaps it is less about innovating and more about working with what we have, whilst acknowledging that keeping things simple is not always the most straightforward option today.

Whether built, landscaped, natural or invisible, the ‘already-there’ forms the substance of our approach. It constitutes a body of data, lines, traces and stories that we take pleasure in exploring in an attempt to create a resonance between the contemporary intervention and its surroundings, with that which hosts it. A body of work whose sensitive and subjective interpretation allows us to adopt a stance and develop a language to construct meaning and seek clarity.

Our projects embrace a free and cross-disciplinary approach, which seeks to bring forth a sober, generous and enduring architecture across varied contexts and situations. The landscape, the territory, and both historic and contemporary buildings thus converge towards a shared commitment to producing, in all situations, architecture that is contextual and deeply rooted.
Aware of the challenges of our time, we seek to produce a reasoned architecture where materials and craftsmanship are harnessed to serve a virtuous and responsible process.
Our tools are drawing, the definition of detail, the rigour and simplicity of the plan, light and material. Our work focuses on bringing these elements together to make the project’s concept tangible and intelligible.
