PROJECT WALL by Studio Marco Vermeulen

Studio Marco Vermeulen designs for the future of our built environment. Based in Rotterdam, the practice works across architecture, landscape architecture, urban strategies, museums, exhibitions and innovative material applications. At the heart of every project lies the question of how design can contribute to an environment in which people, nature and climate exist in balance.

The studio explores the history, landscape, water systems, ecology and use of a place to understand what an environment needs and what opportunities it offers. This knowledge forms the foundation for designs that build on existing qualities while creating space for new developments.

This approach is reflected in buildings that add ecological value through features such as living roofs, living façades and integrated nesting habitats, as well as in landscapes and public spaces where water, biodiversity and spatial quality reinforce one another.

The Generous Façade – Biobased and Nature-Inclusive

Studio Marco Vermeulen explores how biobased materials, innovative production techniques and modular design systems can shape the façades of the future. The concept is based on a single intelligently designed façade panel that, simply by rotating it, creates a surprising variety of façade compositions. With minimal means, it achieves maximum design freedom while enabling an efficient production process.

Yet a façade can do much more than simply enclose a building. By providing habitat for birds, bats and insects, it actively contributes to biodiversity and a healthier living environment. In this way, a new generation of façades emerges - combining aesthetic quality, circularity and nature-inclusive design while making a positive contribution to a resilient built environment.

The four façade panels presented in this exhibition were developed in collaboration with manufacturer NPSP. They demonstrate how research, material innovation and architecture come together in façades that do more than clad buildings, they actively contribute to the quality of their surroundings.
