In the case of ETICS, the window sill can be designed to drain water quickly and in a controlled manner. This seems obvious at first glance, but in practice mistakes are often made here, with the result that water penetrates the construction through openings.
The window sill can only fulfil its function if the window sill itself, the couplings and the connections to the adjacent parts are permanently watertight and durably resistant to driving rain. If this cannot be guaranteed, the sealing function and controlled drainage must be realised with a secondary seal under the window sill.
According to Buildwise's Infofiche 3.1 (TV274), the installation of a second seal under the windowsill is mandatory if the watertightness of the windowsill and its connections to the joinery has not been certified.
In wooden constructions, we always recommend applying a second seal due to the increased risks and far-reaching consequences in case of water infiltration.
